An “amusing and poetic musical show”
QUAI N° 5 and the singer JULIETTE asked themselves : what would the paintings of Rembrandt or Velasquez be like if they had been our contemporaries? The music of Mozart or Bach if they had been Cuban or Czech? The works of a Victor Hugo born in Russia or those of an Argentinian Shakespeare?
We cannot measure the percentage of the innate, of culture or of education which comes into play in the composition of a piece. With their concert “One train can hide another”, the artists of QUAI N° 5, and JULIETTE who has designed the stage setting, suggest a possible and subtle reply to this question, orchestrated by the original compositions of Stéphane Logerot, inspired by famous themes of Bach, Mozart, Chopin and even Tchaïkovski. Surprise!
UNCLASSICABLE !
The musicians of QUAI N°5 have in common a solid classical training, a long list of prizes and awards behind them, and excel in the works of the Repertoire. For all that they share the same wish to break down the frontiers of music…This also makes them want to show a different picture of the classical composers. Well hidden, their works are still recognisable under their guise of salsa, tango, blues or tzigane…
What better bridge between the cultures and the generations than to bring the Great Masters of the past across to other banks, out of their own times. This musical odyssey takes us from one end of the planet to the other, mixing cultures, instruments and popular music of all sorts. The optimism and agility with which QUAI N°5 crosses musical types dissolves all the cultural frontiers. These five inspired musicians combine cultures and periods, melodies and rhythms in a brilliant game of “trompe-l’oreille” with contagious humour and obvious pleasure.Their passionate and colourful “classical/world” interpretation makes their creations into a work in its own right which the audience rightly appreciates.
This type of project is rarely undertaken by highly accomplished musicians ; this is not the case here for behind the name QUAI N°5 are first level players : Jean-Marc Phillips-Varjabédian (violin; trio Wanderer, Victoires de la Musique 1997 and 2000, winner of numerous international competitions…) Vahan Mardirossian (piano; international soloist, several critically acclaimed recordings…), Stéphane Logerot (bass, guitar, harmonica; member of l’Orchestre National de France, partner of Richard Galliano…), Jean-Luc Manca (accordeon; Sacem prize, first prize in the competitions of Geneva and Linz…), Paul Mindy (percussion Charles Cros prize, Georges Brassens prize…).Together or separately you have heard them in the greatest festivals such as Jazz in Marciac, Vienna, Montreal, The Hague, les Folles Journées at Nantes or Lisbon, Jazz in Nice or in concert halls such as the Concertgebouw of Amsterdam, Carnegie Hall in New York, Santa Cecilia in Rome, the Barbican in London, the Suntory Hall in Tokyo, the Champs-Elysée Theatre or the Chatelet Theatre in Paris…
We could talk much more about the long career of these instrumentalists but what you really need to know is that, to perform a QUAI N°5 concert, you need 7.25 kilograms of brainpower, 5 pairs of eardrums, 106 billion braincells which vibrate in harmony, 25 pairs of fingers, 51 toes (yes…) working away, the lens of 10 well-focussed corneas, and 352413 hairs which stand up!In all more than 500 billion billion molecules go into action to perform one single piece of QUAI N°5!
Like any good artist, they suffer slightly and periodically from that barbarous illness leukophobia*…Luckily for them (and for you!) they are not victims of either scopophobia** nor eurotophobia***.
However, if like them, you do not suffer from siderodromophobia**** then climb quickly aboard the train at Quai N°5 !
Bon voyage…

TAMBOUR QUARTET
This concert features, for the first time, four tambourines among the most representative of ethnic music : the Brazilianpandeiro, North Africa’s and the Middle East’s riqq, South India’s kanjira, and South Italy’s tambourine.
Each of these percussion instruments is played with a unique technique and style and their repertoires are associated with traditions that date back to the beginning of time, though they remain as lively as ever.
Carlo Rizzo composed this music as an invitation to an endless journey between modern composing and the power of revisited tradition, through the rhythms of the outstanding repertoire of these instruments that have always accompanied profane and sacred rituals, dances and often, trance situations.
In addition to the composer’s will is the wish to emphasise, for the listener, the extreme modernity of these tambourines that have survived for millenniums and still remain models of technical complexity and musical freshness.
Adel Shams el Din
Adel Shams el Din, an Egyptian-born musician living in Paris, has mastered the art of percussion, including with the riqq (a tambour on a frame with a single fish or goat skin membrane, with ten pairs of cymbals), and as become a reference in eastern percussion instruments.
Born in Egypt in 1950, he studied mechanical engineering and was taught by Maitre Fathi Guenayd, and in 1972, started as a soloist fir Radio d'Alexandrie. In 1979, he quit his career as an engineer to devote his time to eastern percussion instruments. He came to Paris, and accompanies the most famous Arab singers such as Wadi El-ssafi, Loutfi Bouchnak, Sabri Moudalal, Hamzah Chakour, Omar Sarmini and Hussein Al-azami ; as well as international musicians such as Jean Michel Jarre, Zakir Hussein, Michel Sanchez (Deep Forest).
After taking part in about forty CDs, he recorded his own CD (Forty Rhythms of the Middle East), a historical document and a treaty of Eastern Music.
The official percussionist of the Al-Kindî band since its creation, and the partner of many musical adventures, he is also a soloist in his own right.
His knowledge and his impeccable mastery of all of the most sophisticated rhythms alike make him a much-respected performer sought after by professional musicians in France, Africa and the Near East.
The riqq is contemporary with the tar and the bendir. On an ancient Greece drawing of the 5th century BC, it is represented next to a harp, aloi, lyre and a lute. Close to the tambourine, it is an important part of traditional Turkish, Iranian, and eastern music, as shown by the recordings of Adel Shams el Din (Ensemble Al Kindî). With its high-pitched membrane and metallic ringing, the riqq, when played with the appropriate technique, produces a clear and well-structured rhythm. Paul Mindy
Voice, pandeiro, birimbao, surdo, udu, cajon
The percussionnist and singer Paul Mindy teaches in the Conservatoire of Aubervilliers-LaCourneuve, near Paris, specialising in Brazilian music. He takes several masterclasses throughout the world (including the Paris Conservatoire, Lyon, Monaco and Recife).
Paul Mindy was awarded the Georges Brassens Prize, and has sung at the Olympia Theatre in Paris.
In 2001 he won the Assemblée Nationale prize, followed in 2002 by the Academie Charles Cros prize for arranging.
He has taken part in several recording.
Paul Mindy’s undeniable talent and distinctive ability on the percussion have enabled him to play with great musicians such as Richard Galliano, Roland Dyens, Carlo Rizzo, Franck Tortiller, Dave Samuel and Baden Powell.
Today his research is turning more and more to exploring the underlying links between apparently contrasting musical worlds.
Introduced in Brazil by the Portuguese, who used it to accompany their religious processions, the Pandeiro is a small tambourine on a wooden frame covered by simple fine animal skin. Its frame accommodates cymbals called pratileiras. Its rhythms are obtained by hitting and shaking, to vibrate the cymbals. This instrument constitutes a good fraction of Brazilian percussion. In spite of its origin, it has retained all its specificity due to the addition of cymbals and to their importance when it emerged in Brazil. Alone, it can perform sambas, partido alto. Its main role however is to accompany rhythm in frenzied sounds.
Ravi Prasad
It was in Kerala, a Southern India province, that Ravi Prasad was born. With a diploma of the Central Carnatic College of Madras, he studied his country’s traditional music and performed with famous musicians. Thus he helped the make known Southern India’s devotional singing, called "carnatic" in Europe.
In 1985, his arrival in France allowed him to get in touch with other forms of music. His inquisitiveness prompted his interest in jazz, electro-acoustics and modern music… He multiplied encounters with artists such as Bernard LUBAT, Gérard MARAIS, Dominique Regef and Pedro Soler with whom his friendship has evolved into a duet. Every time is an opportunity to take in other cultures, other sounds and to commit his knowledge to fruitful musical dialogues.
The friendship of Ravi Prasad and Pedro Soler, a flamenco guitar player, led both men in 1991 to the from the Ganges to the Guadalquivir adventure, resulting in an album (November 1999), followed by several concerts in Europe. In late 1997, the duet gave a prestigious performance at the Berlin Philharmonics. They also take part in the "Carrefour Mondial des Guitares" festival in Fort de France (Martinique).
In 1995 in Ithal Ravi Prasad’s singing met the piano ; in 1997, at the end of a two-week session bringing together 120 performers, Mythia, the Indian Symphony combines melodic themes and rhythmical Indian cycles with jazz, flamenco and western classical music for orchestra and choir. Mythia will also give birth to a musical friendship with the double bass player Philippe GAL with whom Ravi Prasad performs on a regular basis.
Later, in 1998, with the choreographer Régine Chopinot, he created Chant de Lune. A tour of Europe and India was organised with Ballet Atlantique. In 2001, Ravi Prasad started the creation of Entre Deux, a piece for string and voice trio, resulting in an album and show directed by Régine Chopinot. Continuing his work with Régine Chopinot, Ravi Prasad provided the musical composition and performance of the choreographic ballet Anh Mat (introduced in Avignon at the Off festival from July 10 to 20, 2002), including 10 dancers from the Vietnamese National Opera.
An timeless artist, Ravi has also designed Indian Gypsy (Indian Dance Music & Remix Music), with DJ Goze, a title of which is featured on the Buddha Bar III compilation. He was a guest of Talvin Singh for the creation Songs For The Inner World of the 2003 Saint-Denis Festival.
Ravi Prasad is also considered one of the pioneers of the electro-Indian school in London.
Additionally, Ravi Prasad is starting the creation of Malbar Expérience, working with Indian musician from the Reunion around memory, common root acknowledgement, with a modern interpretation of tradition, based on the experience and prejudices of the artistes of a new generation.
Carlo Rizzo
Carlo Rizzo was born in Mestre (Venice) in 1955, and wanted to be a painter, after achieving a state diploma at the Beaux-Arts Academy of Rome. However, he changed is mind and opted for music, which until then was only one of his hobbies.
In 1979 he discovered the tambourine through Alfio Antico and Raffaele Inserra, two traditional percussionists from Southern Italy... He continued learning on his own, and gradually discovered all the possibilities of hand-played percussion instruments, both through traditional repertoires and through ancient music and modern research.
He his both a performer and an inventor, as he created new instruments in order to go even further, the polytimbral tambourine and the multitimbral tambourine, allowing him to adapt his outstanding virtuosity and sense of improvisation to all his repertoires.
Carlo Rizzo has played as a soloist since 1992 in concerts combining percussion and singing. Major national stages and international festivals include him in their programmes on a regular basis.
Since 1988, he has created or taken part in the creation of some thirty ensembles allowing him to feel as comfortable with traditional, ancient, modern or jazz music.
He was made a Chevalier of the Arts and Letters in 2001
